The Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 MSM8952 is a mid-range ARMv8-based chipset which was developed largely for Android tablets and smartphones, it was announced in September 2015. The 600 series has become the highest possible option for mid-range smartphones. Each year there are new additions to it and this article is dedicated to the most popular among them, the Snapdragon 617.
Process Technology (nm)
The 617 is manufactured by TSMC in a 28 nm LP manufacturing process. Using that specifications, there’s an expected medium or medium power consumption for use in medium-sized or larger smartphones and tablets.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Processor
The Cortex-A53 in the Snapdragon 617 is the successor to the popular Cortex-A7 design. The cores offer a variety of improvements such as a better branch prediction. This leads to a significantly higher performance per clock, which is even above the older Cortex-A9.
The 8 cores in the 617 are divided into two quad-core clusters, each integrated for different operating points. While one cluster can clock up to 1.5 GHz it therefore handles more high demanding applications. The other four cluster is limited to a maximum of 1.2 GHz for energy-saving purposes. It is efficient as all eight cores can function simultaneously, according to the applications being used.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Graphics
The chip uses the Adreno 405 and it’s most likely clocked around 550MHz as well as an OpenGL ES 3.1 API support. With the Adreno 405, applications look better and gaming seems easier.
Performance
It offers a performance similarly in comparison to that of the older Snapdragon 615 with a Krait architectural build. In addition, it has a 32/64 Bit LPDDR3-1866 Memory Controller which means it can let users run a 64bit capable device on their phones and it supports more than 4GB RAM with speed capability of up to 800MHZ.
The Image Signal Processor (ISP) has a megapixel Support of Up to 21 MP dual camera. Its video can capture up to 1080pixels at 60 FPS with video playback up to 1080pixels and Codec Support H.265 (HEVC), and H.264 (AVC). The chip supports a 1080pixel maximum on-device display for a FullHD view on screen.
Connectivity
The processor supports the X8 LTE with Cat 7. and being dual SIM compatible, this means it can support a download speed of up to 300Mbps and upload speed of up to 100Mbps.
With Wi-Fi connectivity standards of 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n as well as it’s Wi-Fi Spectral Bands at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, it is said to be able to utilize a peak speed of up to 433 Mbps.
It also has features such as the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology and Bluetooth 4.1. Nevertheless, the Quick Charge 3.0 technology, according to Qualcomm is up to 38% more efficient than QuickCharge 2.0 and offers four times faster charging of mobile devices as compared to standard charging.
Benchmarks (AnTuTu)
Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 40876, avg of 44579.5, median of 45237 and max points of 46968.
