Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 Review, Specs & Phones

Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 is a direct successor to the Snapdragon 660, and was made to fill the gap between the 600-series and the newly introduced Snapdragon 710.

The new Snapdragon 670, in turn, seems to be directly derived from the 710, as the two are so close in specifications that at first glance one can easily miss the differences.

‘Mid-range’ or ‘High-end’ whichever way Qualcomm would call them, smartphones are killing it.
Qualcomm has announced a new System on a Chip for the sprouting mid-range segment of Android. Named the Snapdragon 670 Mobile Platform, a chip quite similar to the 675.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 670

The SD670 utilizes the same CPU configuration as found on the Snapdragon 710, the Kryo 360.
The new Kryo 360 performance and efficiency cores are based on Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 IP designs.
The chip posseses 2 Cortex-A75 Gold cores that can go up to 2 GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 Silver cores that can clock up to 1.7 GHz.

The Gold and Silver cores have an L1 cache of 64 KB and 32 KB and an L2 cache of 256 KB and 128 KB respectively along with a shared 1 MB L3 cache. Qualcomm measures a 15% improvement over the Snapdragon 660 without drastically affecting it’s battery life.

Process Technology (nm)

Both the Snapdragon 670 and 710 are fabricated on Samsung’s 10nm LPP process.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 Graphics

The graphics component is powered by the Adreno 615.
Qualcomm promises a performance increase of 25% over the Adreno 512 in the Snapdragon 660, while the 710 promised a 35% increase in the same comparison.

The Adreno 615 has the capability to power FHD+ displays while supporting UHD video playback alongside support for Open GL ES 3.2, Open CL 2.0, and Vulkan APIs. The GPU also aids the DSP in AI and heterogeneous compute workflows.

Performance

Another noteworthy feature of the new Snapdragon 670 is the presence of the Hexagon 685 DSP and the Spectra 250 ISP. The Hexagon 685 DSP is found in the flagship Snapdragon 845 SoC and is responsible for meeting most of the AI compute capabilities needs.

The addition of the Spectra 250 ISP which is component of the Snapdragon 710 and first of its kind for the 600-series brings pro features such as noise reduction, image stabilization, depth sensing, slow motion capture, and UHD recording at 30 fps to more mid-range devices.

According to Qualcomm the Spectra 250 ISP can perform all these functions at a 30% higher efficiency than the Snapdragon 660. The 250 ISP also allows the system-on-chip to support dual 16 megapixel cameras or a single 25 megapixel camera.

Connectivity

The Snapdragon 670 comes with the usual suite of connectivity options and the in-built X12 LTE modem supports with download speeds up to 600 Mbps and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. The X12 modem can automatically choose the best connection between Wi-Fi and LTE and OEMs can also add support for bridging LTE and Wi-Fi to increase download speeds.

It also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology which can take devices from empty to 50% in 15 minutes. That means more music and video streaming, more game-playing with up to 30% more battery life compared to the previous generation.

The last advantage of the Snapdragon 670 in this review is that it’s pin and software are compatible with Snapdragon 712, allowing vendors to choose between them with minimal engineering efforts.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 186735, avg of 191724.3, median of 193767 and max points of 194671.
