Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 is another mid-range ARMv8-based SoC that was introduced by Qualcomm and runs mainly on Android devices. It was announced in February 2014, and immediately started powering lower mid-range smartphones.
The chip is built on the 64-bit architecture powered by 8 Cortex-A53 CPU cores that can clock up to 1.7 GHz. This is a slight upgrade to the Snapdragon 610 we reviewed earlier. The 8-cores on the 615 are divided into two 4 core clusters with one set capable of clocking 1.7 GHz the other set hits a maximum of 1.0 GHz.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 Processor
The 64-bit architecture ARMv8 ISA Cortex-A53 cores clocking at 1.7 GHz does the job effortlessly. As expected, it provides significant improvement in performance when compared to older Cortex-A7 and Cortex-A9.
The 2x 32-bit memory controller (LPDDR3-1600, 12.8 GB/s) and 28nm technology design combine to provide adequate support for LTE cat. 4 (up to 150 Mbps), WCDMA, CDMA, EV-DO, TDSCDMA and GSM/EDGE, Wi-Fi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 4.0. It comes with an ISP capable of handling sensors up to 21 MP.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 MSM8939 Graphics
Just like the 610, the 615 is also powered by the Adreno 405 graphics card clocking in at 550 MHz. The GPU, can adequately provide support for supports DirectX 11.2 (FL 11_1) including hardware tessellation, OpenGL ES 3.1, and OpenCL 1.2. When playing games, everything should run smoothly, except the game is over 1GB in space and quite demanding.
Process Technology (nm)
This chipset is built on the 28nm process technology, this was capable of providing medium power consumption but not anymore. The modern day 10nm chips is more power efficient compared to this and helps the battery last longer.
Benchmarks (AnTuTu)
The 615 has a decent rating across several benchmarks. On AnTuTu v6, the chip has a minimum score of 427825, maximum 49293 Points, average 33966.3 points and a median point of 32024 (32%) when tested severally.
