Apple A11 Bionic chipset was introduced in 2017 and went to power the three smartphones released that year by the company. After almost 10yrs of evolution in the generation of iPhone, it became iconic to design a Bionic chipset powered with ARM architectural build. It’s the mobile processor powering the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X smartphones.
Apple A11 Bionic Processor
Apple moved from being single core in it’s first generation of iPhone to dual-core and then quad-core making further moves into an octa-core as found in the A11 chip.
A 11 is a 64-bit ARM big.LITTLE powered system on a chip which possesses 6 cores. The A11 Bionic chip comes with an octa-core (6) CPU. Two high performance cores and four efficiency cores paired with Apple’s new Neural Engine for handling AI tasks and Face recognition.
Performance
The first two cores clocked at 2.53GHz according to Apple offer a 25% increase in performance while the other four efficiency cores clocked at 1.42GHz offers 75% faster performance as compared with it’s predecessor the A10 Fusion.
It’s however worthy to note that all six cores can function simultaneously if the Application warrants it. The SoC also contains independent L2 cache, meaning the four efficiency cores could be more independent than their A10 ancestors.
The independence is underscored by the fact that the four cores share a common cluster ID property, while the two higher performance core shares a distinct cluster ID of their own.
Process Technology (nm)
It is manufactured by TSMC using 10nm FinFET+ process technology which contains 4.3 billion transistors on a die 87.66 mm2 in size, 30% smaller than the A10, the A11 Bionic is a rather big chip, especially when making comparisons to the Snapdragon 835 with 3 Billion transistors.
Apple A11 Bionic Graphics
The chip is known to integrate an Apple-designed three-core graphics processing unit (GPU) with a 30% increase in faster graphics rendering than the A10. Embedded in the A11 is the M11 motion co-processor. The A11 includes a new image processor which enables computational photography functions such as : lighting estimation, wide color capture, and advanced pixel processing.
Deviating from the concept of imagination-based GPU, Apple has introduced internally designed GPU which is built into the processor and claims to be faster than its predecessors.
It is important to note about its GPU is the first integrated GPU that was designed by Apple and not licensed by PowerVR. Though it doesn’t portray much difference from the GPU in the A10 chip.
Benchmarks (AnTuTu)
Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 197851, avg of 206760, median of 204270 and max points of 218158.
