Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636

Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 will be going head to head in this comparison. As phones varies so do their processors. But most phone manufacturers would rather lean towards Qualcomm taking the lead in processor manufacturing.

While other leading processor manufacturers Such as MediaTek exist, comparisons are being made among these processors to help users make a decision while purchasing. In early 2019, Samsung hit the technology market with the Exynos 7904 chip in the Exynos 7 series.

According to Samsung, the Exynos 7904 is an upper mid-range system on a chip manufactured for Android smartphones which was firstly introduced in its M series called the Galaxy M20.

Exynos chips can only be found in Samsung devices. Over the past few years, Samsung has registered an influential position as a chipset manufacturer with its ARM-based Exynos series chipsets.

This comparison however is detailed on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 and Samsung Exynos 7904 processors because both reflects almost the same capability. Seeing the competition in the Technology market, It can even be adjudged that Samsung was trying to compete with Qualcomm in this.

Although Introducing a new chip in the market Samsung did not really make anything spectacular about this chip. But lets take a look at both of them to see if our Judgement is true or false.

Process Technology (nm)

Both processors are manufactured using a 14nm FinFET manufacturing process therefore, they are both power efficient chips.

Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636: Processor

Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636

Both Samsung’s Exynos 7904 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 656 are built using the same Cortex A73/A53 cores but the Exynos 7904 features 2 powerful Cortex-A73 cores clocked at up to 1.8 GHz for high performance, coupled with 6 power efficient Cortex-A53 cores at up to 1.6 GHz.

While the Exynos 7904 is built on a 2/6 configuration, the Snapdragon 636 is a 4/4 configuration featuring eight custom Kryo 260 cores with 4 powerful Cortex A73 performance cores and Cortex A53 cores both clocked at up to 1.8 GHz.

When compared to the Snapdragon 636, the Exynos 7904 should be on a close range to its performance but the Qualcomm chip should have more advantage. The SD636 has four performance cores while the Exynos chip has just two. The Qualcomm 636 should, therefore, be superior for CPU performance exhibiting a 9.09% increase, but the extra processing power will use up more battery.

Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636: Graphics

There’s a slight difference in their GPU. While Qualcomm Engineered the Snapdragon 636 with an Adreno 509 GPU, Samsung on the other hand featured a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. Although Making GPU comparisons is hard with the two chips using Adreno 509 and Mali-G71 MP2.

The Adreno 509 GPU is clocked with a frequency of around 720MHz, while the Mali-G71 MP2 GPU has a clock frequency of around 770MHz so it should offer comparable performance. Using this as a basis for our comparison, The Exynos 7904 here exudes a better Graphical performance over the Snapdragon 636.

Samsung Exynos 7904 Vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 636: Performance

Camera in the Exynos 7904 can support up to 32MP single sensor, with an additional support of triple camera setup enablement. The 3rd camera stands for Ultra Wide shots and panoramas. Whereas the Camera support in the Snapdragon 636 is 24 MP single camera or 16 MP Dual Camera.

For displays, Samsung Exynos 7904 has support for HD+ as well as FHD+ display panel up to the resolution of 2400 x 1080 giving an aspect ratio of 20:9. It’s also worthy to note that the 7904 can play FHD+ videos at 130 FPS and UHD videos at 30 FPS.

Whereas Snapdragon 636 is enabled for FHD+ (2160 x 1080) giving an 18:9 aspect ratio and video play at 30FPS UHD and 120FPS Full HD videos respectively.

Connectivity

For connectivity comparisons, both seem to share the same features such as Cat. 12 LTE which has 600Mbps download and Cat. 13 LTE with 150Mbps uploads, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the 7904 reaches an avg score of 113662, while the 636 reaches an avg score of 124662.
