Samsung Exynos 7870 Octa Review, Phones, Specs and Benchmarks

Samsung Exynos 7870 Octa -core Processor was introduced in early 2016 and went ahead to power mid-range Galaxy smartphones with its octa-core processor. As expected, the chip integrates a 64-bit architecture.

Eight of those cores are Cortex-A53 cores, which were designed in the 14nm process node, which we will be covering below. The chip comes with a more advanced LTE Cat.6 modem which reported clocks fast transfer rates of up to 300Mbps (downstream) and 50Mbps (upstream).

The chip also promises unrivaled speed and efficiency in the mid-range segment, according to Samsung. It offers more than enhanced performance accompanied by diverse features. It’s also worthy to note that its LTE Category 6 2 was one of the most popular features required on mobile chips at that time.

The 7870 reaches a fast memory speed of 1866MHz, however, that’s the clock rate of the dual-channel memory controller. It’s very obvious that the single channel memory controller will clock lower. Nonetheless, the 1866MHz speed is more than enough to help the RAM space available in terms of multitasking.

Although no specific gigabytes were given, but the chip can can handle up to 6GB RAM and 16MP dual camera. The display can also support FHD+ or WUXGA display, while playing 3D games. Video can playback at 60fps thanks to the graphics processing unit which we will be detailing below.

Samsung Exynos 7870 Octa Graphics

For graphics, the Mali-T830 GPU from ARM reigns supreme and comes with dual cores, while clocking up to 700 MHz. It’s also accompanied by the advanced MFC (multi-format codec) and image signal processor (ISP) for displaying high resolution images. Gaming with this chipset should run smoothly, especially if it’s most of the games on the Play Store.

Process Technology (nm)

Built on the much newer 14m FinFET process technology, this consumes 30% less power when compared to it’s competitions and predecessor. The power efficiency is on par with modern day chips, however, it’s obviously not up to high-end chips with 7nm process.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Going through benchmarks, specifically on AnTuTu, the 7870 reaches a low of 44191, an average of 45944, median of 45593 and a max point of 47339.
