The Samsung Exynos 7420 Octa chip was one of the first to actually pioneer the 14nm FinFET process node seen on most mid-range chips today. Because of this, the mobile processor was nicknamed “the industry’s first mobile processor to be built on 14nm technology.
This, of course, should offer enhanced performance and better power efficiency compared to its predecessor. It was introduced alongside the Galaxy S6 flagship back in 2015, and went on to become a force to be reckoned with in the mobile processing department.
As a flagship at that time, it brought powerful processing ability ensuring a smooth multitasking and overall usage. It also comes with advanced and improved GPU, MFC and ISP which allows you enjoy every single detail.
Samsung Exynos 7420 Octa-core Processor
Being a flagship chipset in 2015, it came with an octa-core processor, the first CPU cores are four Cortex-A57 cores clocking at 2.1GHz, which is low compared to the Exynos 7885 Octa. While the remaining four Cortex-A53 reaches a clock speed of 1.6GHz. You should also know that the Cortex cores are 64-bit capable, thanks to the ARMv8 design.
The cores are known for handling both intensive workloads and lighter tasks as well. The chip can handle intensive workloads without buffering. It was also one of the best to come with augmented reality and face/eye recognition.
It can be used on phone with a display resolution of up to WQUXGA 3840×2400 and Ultra HD 4K. Samsung also added a new encoder to the Multi Format Codec (MFC), known as HEVC(H.265) alongside the VP9 decoder. This allows for recording and playing 4K video at 30fps.
Samsung Exynos 7420 Graphics
Samsung integrated the ARM Mali-T760 MP8 GPU on the chip, this enables realistic 3D gaming experience and a graphic-intensive user interface. It supports the OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.1 and DirectX 11, and is quite powerful compared to the Adreno 430.
Process Technology (nm)
The 7420 was designed on the 2nd generation 14nm FinFET LPE process technology. Because of this, it was regarded as one of the most power efficient chip in early 2015. The 3-dimensional transistors on the FinFET process reduces leakage of both power consumption and performance.
Benchmarks (AnTuTu)
Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the 7420 reaches a medium score of 77,963 overtime.
