Samsung Exynos 5430 Octa Review, Phones, Specs, Benchmarks

The Samsung Exynos 5430 Octa (also called Exynos 5 Octa) is a chip designed for smartphones and tablets. Using the system-on-chip (S-o-C) concept. The chipset came into public sphere when Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy Alpha device around mid-2014. The chipset features four cortex-A15 cores with maximum clock speed at 1.8 GHz, compared to the Exynos 5433 which maxs at 1.9GHz.

Additionally, there’s 4 Cortex-A7 cores available to go up to 1.3 GHz, and also an ARM Mali-T628 GPU for graphics. The s-o-c doesn’t ship with internal cellular modems, so special arrangements need to be made for that before the chipset can be used in smartphones.

The main distinguishing feature of this chipset when compared to others from Samsung is the process technology. This chipset is the first to implement the Samsung 20nm manufacturing process, as even Samsung is also the first manufacturer to introduce this technology. Apart from that, there’s really not much difference between the Exyns 5 Octa and previous models like Exynos 5420 and 5422.

Samsung Exynos 5430 Graphics

Regarding GPU, Exynos 5 Octa doesn’t offer much of a difference when compared to the 5420 or 5422, apart from the small increase in speed reaching 600MHz because of the Mali T628MP6.

Performance

One major change in this chipset is that the gate-first approach has been replaced with gate-last approach. Gate-first approach means the gate is the first par of the transistor to be formed. While the gate-last approach means the gate is the last part of the transistor to be formed. This effect of this change is supposed to improve performance because the efficiency of the gate is no longer affected by the temperature changes in the transistor.

Samsung Exynos 5430 Processor

In terms of processor, not much has changed since the 5420 and 5422, apart from the slight increase in clock speed to 1.8Ghz. Just like the 5420, the 5430 comes fully HMP enabled. One very noticeable change in the processor is the replacement of the CPU IP from the r2p4 versions to r3p3 versions. According to Nvidia, this change is supposed to help improve the clock gating and power management of the CPU in this s-o-c.

Process Technology (nm)

There’s an improved silicon straining technique in this chipset which is expected to improve the direct current in the transistors. Which in turn leads to higher performance and more efficient power management. The end result is a 25% decrease in power consumption, that is about 125mV, all thanks to the 20nm process node.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 5, the chip reaches a low of 50779, avg of 51543.5, median of 51543.5 and max points of 52308.
