Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Review, Phones, Specs, Benchmarks

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 which was announced at the Mobile World Congress in March 2015 is one of the most cutting edge processors ever created. It also includes support for Vulcan 1.0 API as well as the more common OpenGL 3.1 used on most current Android games. Vulcan is designed to make it easier for developers to design great-looking games.

Process Technology (nm)

The 820 uses Samsung’s 14nm FinFET manufacturing process was built with a complete different architecture to its predecessor the Snapdragon 810 which was built on 20nm. Resulting to two times performance and two times efficiency as compared to the 810. The Battery life improvements according to Qualcomm uses 30% less power than the Snapdragon 810 all thanks to its efficiency improvement with the system-on-a-chip’s various component like the Kryo CPU and Adreno GPU.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Octa-Core Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820

It is built on a Kryo CPU at 2.2GHz versus the Cortex A57/53 octa-core agreement in the 810. The 64-bit CPU remains one of the bigger changes and has reportedly offers twice the performance of the 810. Its CPU is quad-core and has a maximum 2.2GHz clock speed. The Kryo CPU uses Qualcomm’s Symphony System Manager as an intelligent resource management tool, which extends controls as that of task scheduling and power management across its entire processor.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Graphics

Qualcomm estimates that with the Adreno 530 GPU on this chip offers 40% faster graphics and users can expect 40% less power consumption when it comes to gaming. This gives smartphones the ability to power 4k displays which Qualcomm says is essential to making things like a good VR experience possible.

Performance

The AnTuTu benchmark score revealed that the Snapdragon 820 ranked 130,225 over the Nexus 6P at 84,465 as well as the Nexus 5X which scored 54,296 in each benchmark test.

The X12 LTE modem has a further boost of performance by adding support for Cat.12 LTE speeds, this means the Snapdragon can see upload speeds of about 600Mbps and download speed of about 150Mbps. This is a massive improvement from what is gotten on the 810’s X10 LTE modem which offers a maximum download speed of 450Mbps and upload speed of 50Mbps. The X12 is the first modem in the world to support LTE on unlicensed spectrum band.

The chip possesses the Hexagon 680 and spectra image signal processor which works together to produce brighter images which are less noisy especially in low light scenarios. Spectra also possess a 14-bit processing this means each photo contains more data than what you get from its predecessor.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 115867, avg of 129628, median of 129257 and max points of 144426.
