Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 APQ8084 Review, Specs, Phones

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 was announced in November 2013, making it the new top model among the ARM System on Chips from Qualcomm. It is a direct successor to the Snapdragon 801 and was the first mobile processor to offer system level ultra HD support, UK video capture, and playback as well as enhanced dual camera (ISP) image signal processor for super fast performance while multi-tasking. This makes it power efficient and gives a desirable mobile user experience.

Process Technology (nm)

The Snapdragon 805 is manufactured by TSMC in a 28-nanometer HPM process. The power consumption should be approximately in the range of its predecessor, which we have estimated at about 3 – 5 W. The full performance will only be achieved in larger tablets as they can tolerate higher temperatures generally better than smaller smartphones. The 20nm process technology allows for more transistors on the chip while bringing power consumption and heat to their reduced minimal.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Processor

The 805 is built on a Quad-core Krait 450 processor. This unlike other ARM Cortex cores, can dynamically alter it’s clock speed as system demands change. The Krait 450 CPU has a core performance between Cortex A-7/A-9 and Cortex A-15 at 2.7GHz per clock compared to the 2.5GHz on the 801.

Built on the ARMv7 ISA the 805 is 32bit enabled and running on a comparison test, the Snapdragon 805 is similar to the Samsung Exynos 5433. This therefore made it one of the fastest ARM-based chipset in 2014.
Furthermore, the chip has an integration of 128-bit LPDDR3-1600 memory controller estimated up to 25.6Gbps.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Graphics

The graphics processing unit is built on Adreno 420 which has a speed of up to 600MHz. The Adreno 420 graphics unit offers new features like the DirectX-11.1, this makes for up to 40% 3D performance boost when compared to the previous Adreno 330. Of course, the Adreno 420 is estimated to be faster than the Mali-T628 MP6 in the Samsung’s Exynos 5420 and 5430.

Other Features

This chipset was designed to offer somewhat higher performance boost. Other features of the Snapdragon 805 includes the support of Qualcomm’s most advanced Wi-Fi for mobile with speed up to 600Mbps, 2-stream dual-band Qualcomm VIVE 802.11ac/b/g/n/ac. It also enables wireless 4K video streaming and other media-intensive applications. It does not have a cellular modem, an additional module must be installed for use in Smartphones, while also supporting Bluetooth 4.1.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 5, the chip reaches a low of 47172, avg of 48524.2, median of 47556.5 and max points of 51812.
