Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AA Review, Phones, Specs

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 is a premium ARM based SoC, which rank lowest among the 800 series in terms of GPU and CPU, as well as processing power. It utilizes the 64 bit framework in combining the working of four powerful CPU cores, which are capable of clocking up to 2.26 GHz in terms of processing speed. The chip was announced in August 2014, and it’s designed is mainly meant for android devices (tablets and smartphones).

Snapdragon 801 Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801

The Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AA processing capability lends it power from the combination of a powerful Krait 400 quad core engine, and a vibrant LPDDR3-1600 memory controller. This ensures the chip effortlessly supports wireless technologies such as Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5 GHz), GSM (GPRS, EDGE), W-CDMA/UMTS (HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, cat.29 DC-HSPA+), MBMS, cat.4 LTE.

It also supports CDMA2000 (1X RTT, 1 × EV-DO Rel.0/Rev.A/Rev.B, 1× EV-DO Rev.A MC, 1× Adv Rev.A/Rev.B) and TD-SCDMA. It is also capable of encoding and playing UHD 4K videos in 3840×2160 at 30 FPS (120 Mbps H.264 High Profile) simultaneously. The processing capability is comparable with that of Nvidia Tegra 4, Snapdragon 712 and Apple A7.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Graphics

The Graphics Processing unit utilizes the Adreno 330 (clocking at 450MHz). This has a texture unit of 8 TMUs offering 50 percent more shaders (probably 6x SIMD16 vs. 4x SIMD16 of the previous generation), as well as providing support for OpenGL ES 3.0 as well as OpenCL 1.2.

Process Technology (nm)

The Chip utilizes the 28nm HPM (High Performance Mobile) HKMG process technology. It was built at TSMC and it is significantly energy efficient, especially when compared with the LP 28nm.

It is less power efficient than other 800 chips, like 855. The maximum power consumption for smartphones is expected to about 3W, while that of tablets should be about 4W.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

On AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the 801 reaches a minimum score of 36792, average score of 42120.8, median score of 41937 and max score of 47123 points.
