Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 Review, Specs & Phones

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 possesses similarities to the Snapdragon 801 with just a slight increment in the 801 processors. With improved GPU the 800 processor is said to be the first mobile processor to hand the iPad’s A6X (with a quad-core Power VR SGX 554MP4 GPU) its graphical covering all thanks to its ability to render real-time graphics fast.

Process Technology

The SD800 from Qualcomm is an ARM based SoC for smartphones. It is manufactured at the TSMC-Taiwan semi-conductor manufacturing company in a 20nm high performance mobile HKMG process. HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) which are materials of the “Gate First” technology are used in a semi conductor manufacturing process usually used to replace a silicon dioxide. It offers superior performance, optimized scalability and manufacturability which provide twice the Gate density when compared to the 40nm processes.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800

It is built on the Krait 400 CPU, it’s an upgrade to the Krait 300 on the Snapdragon 600 processor. The Krait 400 has been adjusted to support a slightly faster L2 cache. Its 4 CPU cores is estimated with a clock speed of up to 2.3GHz which integrates in performance between an ARM Cortex-A9 and Cortex- A15.

This offers a very strong CPU performance. There’s a close similarity between the 800 and the Nividia Tegra4 as well as the Samsung Exynos 5430 and the Apple A7, therefore it was ranked as one of the fastest ARM system on chips in 2013.

The Snapdragon 800’s CPU when taken in comparison surpasses the HTC’s OneX which uses a 1.7GHz quad-core Nividia Tegra3 processor and also Apple’s iPhone 5 which uses Apple’s A6 which integrates at 1.3 processor speed.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Graphics

The 800’s GPU is built on the Adreno 330 which integrates at 450MHz clock rate making it faster when compared to the Adreno 320 which integrates at 400-450MHz. The Adreno 330 has more shaders compared to the Snapdragon 600’s Adreno 320 at 400 to 450MHz even though both GPUs offer the same amount of 8 texture units.

Snapdragon 800 with an LPDdR3-1600 memory controller of 12.8Gbps and various radio modules, combined with the Adreno 330 offers a better graphical performance when compared with the Mali-T628’s Exynos 5420 and the power VR G6 430 of the Apple A7. It however depends on the device, cooling and performance may differ. The GPU supports Open GL ES3.0 as well as Open CL 1.2.

Performance

Snapdragon 800 phones can support multiple displays, 4k full HD display which means it can show one 1080pixel image on the phone and tablet and a very different view on TV. It also has dual Camera capability of 12MP rear camera and 2MP front camera.

On its video side, the Snapdragon 800 is capable of a 4K Ultra HD 30FPS display and encoding videos at 120Mbps and a hardware encoder of H.264.

Connectivity

It supports Bluetooth 4.0, as well as Wi-Fi 802.11ac/a/b/n/g and 802.11ac modules, also with an LTE category 4 radio module, as well as UMTS, MBMS, GSM, CDMA2000, tD-SCDMA for all mobile connectivity platforms.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 5, the chip reaches a low of 32731, avg of 37779.7, median of 38083 and max points of 43075.
