Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 Review, Specs & Phones

Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 is a “mid-to-high-end” system on a chip that sits in the same family as the 650 and 652. The SD653 was announced on October 18, 2016 and serves as a “Pro” version to the existing Snapdragon 652.

Among the most popular devices running on the Snapdragon 653 we can mention the Nubia Z17 mini and Vivo X9 Plus. Here’s what goes into the 653 chip;

Process Technology (nm)

Though the Snapdragon 653 is built on the same 28nm manufacturing process as the 652 which makes it lesser as compared to a 14nm which was predicted in the chip, It’s still tweaked with other features that gives it an upper hand.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 Processor

Qualcomm Snapdragon 653

Qualcomm didn’t change the CPU core but raised the max frequency of the Snapdragon 653’s four ARM Cortex-A72 CPUs to 1.95GHz, up from 1.80GHz in the 652 to handle huge workloads, but kept the max frequency of the four ARM Cortex-A53 CPUs for lighter load the same. The Snapdragon 653’s Cortex-A72 CPU cores boosted from 1.80 to 1.95GHz sees a roughly 10 percent boost to performance, making it far better than the Snapdragon 636.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 Graphics

The 653 chip utilizes a Next generation Qualcomm Adreno 510 GPU which makes high-tier graphics and gaming more immersive than ever.

Snapdragon 653 processor not only features an increase in CPU and GPU performance over the Snapdragon 652, but also doubles the addressable memory (RAM) from 4GB to 8GB supporting greatly enhanced user experiences.

Performance

It still uses LPDDR3-1866 memory with 14.9GB/s of bandwidth like the 652, but doubles the amount of addressable RAM from 4GB to 8GB. This is a prudent extension given the current trend towards 4GB and 6GB configurations for Android phones in the mid-range segment and flagship phones pushing towards 8GB.

It also features a dual ISP (image signal processor) which offers support for up to 21MP zero shutter lag (ZSL) photos at 24fps, Video Capture up to 4K Ultra HD video capture at 30FPS, Up to 1080p video capture at120 FPS.

Its video can playback up to 4K Ultra HD video playback, quad HD (2K) displays and wireless streaming full HD. An H.265 (HEVC) H.264 (AVC) codec support, Qualcomm Hexagon DSP and Qualcomm All-Ways Aware technology.

Connectivity

The Snapdragon 653 also received a modem upgrade: The Snapdragon X9 LTE modem replaces the Snapdragon X8 LTE modem in the 652. Though the X9 still supports the same up to 300Mbps on the downlink using 2x20MHz carrier aggregation and 64-QAM (Category 7), but boosts the uplink to 150Mbps by adopting 64-QAM (Category 13).

The X9 can also improve call clarity when using the Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) codec for VoLTE calls.
The chip has support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology which facilitates faster charging within minutes.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 86735, avg of 91724.3, median of 93767 and max points of 94671.
