Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Review, Specs, Phones & Benchmarks

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SDM636 is one of the first budget of system on chips from Qualcomm to have the Kryo cores built in. The 636 is an updated version of the 630, it was announced in Qualcomm’s 4G/5G summit in Hong Kong. The chip comes with enhanced gaming and display over the Snapdragon 630 mobile platform.

Process Technology (nm)

The SoC is manufactured in 14nm FinFET (FIN effect transistors), process technology platform. FinFET is a transistor architecture which uses raised channels called “fins” from source to drain. This platform is ideal for high performance and power efficient System on a chip, for less power drainage.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Processor

The mobile platform comes packed with enhanced performance based on an octa-core Kryo 260 CPU. This actually marks the second time after the Snapdragon 660 that the Kryo architecture is used in a non-flagship chipset. The Kryo 260’s 1.8GHz cores of the SD636 are a bit lower in clock speed compared to the SD660 Kryo 260 which integrates at clock speed 2.2GHz. The Kryo CPU integrates up to 40% increase in performance than the SD630, it also has an independent efficiency and power cluster each designed to foster performance.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Graphics

It uses the Adreno 509 which offers a better graphical full HD display and enhances gaming performance of real-life visuals and a more advanced 3D graphics.

Performance

This chip can record and play 4K Ultra HD footages at 30fps and 1080fps. The 636 Qualcomm’s Spectra 160 ISP is capable to support capture of up to 24megapixels with a zero shutter lag and fast auto focus with up to 16MP dual camera and 24MP single camera. It also features the Hexagon 680 DSP and utilizes a connectivity band of X12 LTE modem, which can facilitate up to 600Mbps download speed and an upload speed up to 150Mbps.

It has Wi-Fi standard of 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11a/b/n/g and Wi-Fi spectra bands of 2.4GHz and 5GHz with peak speed of up to 433Mbps. MU-MIMO configuration. It also supports the Qualcomm Quick charge 4.0 technology for a 20% faster and 30% increased efficiency in charging speed from zero to 50% in 30 minutes. There’s also Bluetooth 5.0, power Geofencing and tracking sensor assisted navigation.

Benchmarks (AnTuTu)

Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 92015, avg of 98051.2, median of 95445 and max points of 125213.
