HiSilicon Kirin 980 is a flagship chipset introduced by Huawei on its Mate 20 Pro smartphone and its series in 2018. The chip is the upgraded variant of 2017’s 970 that powered the P20 Pro series.
As a modern day flagship chipset, it came with HiAI, a new form of Artificial Intelligence for chipsets, which was specifically designed by Huawei’s HiSilicon.
Process Technology (nm)
The chip was designed on the newer 7nm manufacturing process, making it the first Android powered chipset with such technology at the time of release. It joins the Apple A12 which was also designed with the same process node.
HiSilicon Kirin 980 Processor
The 980 comes with an octa-core processor which consists of four Cortex-A76 cores, two of which clocks at 2.6GHz, while the other 2 clocks at 1.92GHz. The other four energy efficient cores is a Cortex-A55 clocking at 1.8GHz. It’s expected to bring over 15 percent boost to performance, compared to the cores on the 970.
Graphics
It utilizes an ARM Mali-G76 GPU, which reported comes with 4 cores and clocks up to 720MHz delivering high-tier graphics and making gaming more immersive than ever. Compared to the previous generation of ARM GPU, it promises up to 15% gaming and graphics improvements.
Benchmarks (AnTuTu)
Over at AnTuTu, specifically on the version 6, the chip reaches a low of 245662, avg of 251054, median of 252800 and max points of 254229.
